The Karate Kid - Jacket Scene (PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE)
I chose this video clip because I feel like it demonstrates good teaching. During this movie, there was a scene where Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) was called upstairs to Dre's (Jaden Smith) new apartment so they could figure out how to use their hot water since they had just recently moved to China. Mr. Han had ended up witnessing that Dre leaves his jacket on the ground for his mother continuously having to pick it up. During Mr. Han's teaching lessons, he uses this method without explicitly telling Dre how in the end, it would make sense. Mr. Han's strategy is to have Dre put his jacket on the ground, pick it up, hang it, put it on, take it off, etc. After days and days of doing this, Dre becomes frustrated, asking for an explanation (as witnessed in the video). Mr. Han reveals that all of this "training" was a lesson: 1) to pick up your jacket off of the ground so your mother doesn't have to pick it up after you, and 2) these motions that Dre was practicing would end up being extremely helpful to him. Mr. Han shows Dre that he needs to remember to always be strong, to be firm, to focus and concentrate on what Dre wants the end result to be, to be respectful and to get rid of his attitude. I believe that this is a good way of teaching because it allows the student to learn that although practicing something all the time may not always be all fun and games, that the end result is what matters. In conclusion, Dre learned to become more confident with Mr. Han's help and Mr. Han did not dictate Dre's actions or decisions, he guided him.
John Legend - All of Me - EASY Piano Tutorial 50% Speed
I chose this video because I believe that this isn't a very educational video. This video is just a cover of a song in 50% speed and there is no teacher in this video that explains how to actually play this. I do not feel like beginner students will learn anything from this video since there is no actual teacher explaining the processes behind playing this song. This video automatically assumes that the viewer already has base knowledge of the piano and expects the viewer to be able to play along even at 50% speed. There is also no step by step process either. If the person in charge of this video made extra little parts that explain what they're doing and how they're doing it or maybe gave suggestions and tips, then I believe it would be more educational for the viewers. For example, if they were to split the song up into different sections and play the sections hands separately at the same pace that they have it as now, I believe that it would be of more help to the people who are trying to learn this song who may not have a musical background!
